STEP Program 2024

Bosma’s Student Training Employment Program (STEP) looked a little different this year but was just as successful as ever. Due to ongoing construction at The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI), 11 students gathered on Butler’s campus for a week in June to prepare their resumes and gain real work experience. We want to thank Butler for working with Bosma to allow the students to stay on their campus and experience some of the university’s features, such as the Planetarium.

Students interned for a week for several local companies that partner with Bosma’s Employment Services Team, such as Lou Malnati’s, Banzi Balloons, and Jordan YMCA. STEP participants can choose from a variety of roles, including food preparation, childcare, and large-scale balloon decorations.

"I really enjoyed showing the little ones how someone who is blind or visually impaired can read them a story. This is likely their first interaction with a blind person and think they will remember it as they continue to grow and navigate the world,” said Jazmine Nelson while interning at the Jordan YMCA  (pictured above).

The STEP program doesn't just benefit the students that participate in it -- it is also a great opportunity to educate employers in the community on what a person who is blind can achieve when given an opportunity.
