“I maneuver so well with my dog guide!"
I have always been an independent person – always on the go. The rapid loss of my vision from retinitis pigmentosa was initially devastating. I now had to rely on others not only for transportation, but also minor tasks.
Simple things like getting the mail, preparing peanut butter and jelly for my son and getting dressed with matching clothes became difficult. I was petrified as to how I would take care of my young son and my unborn child, as I was pregnant. I also did not want to give up arts and crafts as a hobby.
Renewed independence…
My training at the Bosma Center was a lifesaver. Through very patient and caring instructors, I regained most of my independence. I learned how to take care of daily household functions including how to fix a broken toilet! I can now eat a meal without losing my silverware, organize and mark my clothes and most importantly – be mobile.
The proper use of a cane and accomplished mobility was instrumental in my acceptance into the Leader Dog program. Now I maneuver so well that most people think I am training my guide dog versus using him for assistance!
Except for driving a car, I am again independent. I fix all my family’s meals, handle all household chores, take pottery classes at Indianapolis Art Center, surf the internet on my computer, and run the after-school program at my son’s school.
Like all blind people, I hope one day to regain some form of sight. But knowing that my training at Bosma Center has made me feel normal and vital, is a major comfort. My heartfelt thanks and thoughts go to everyone at the Bosma Center.
